TWO drivers found themselves with flooded engines when a spring tide deluged a seafront car park.
One elderly couple, who were in their car, managed to escape to safety after becoming trapped.
But the owner of a red Renault Megane had to wade into the water to retrieve his vehicle.
The drama unfolded on Friday afternoon at Littlehaven Beach, South Shields, South Tyneside, as families were enjoying a chilly walk along the blustery front.
Marian Lewis, who was with her granddaughter, Anna, said the car park flooded in minutes.
South Tyneside Council confirmed that Harbour Drive car park was liable to flood during high tides.
"This is clearly stated on signposts at the site," a spokesman said.
"Weather conditions have been particularly severe. Work will be carried out to clear any debris that has been washed up and, if necessary, to maintain the safety of the car park."
He added: "Unfortunately, the council cannot accept liability for any damage caused."
