A GIRLS football team that formed last year is preparing to take part in a national competition.
Consett YMCA Juniors under-13s side, The Belles, is taking part The Blackpool Youth Soccer Tournament at the start of June.
Chairman of The Belles Supporters' Club Ian Whiteman, whose daughter Alex, 11, plays in defence, said: "Some of them had never even kicked a ball before but they have come on leaps and bounds.
"It is great to watch and just as fast-paced and as exciting as the boys' games.
"It is not as aggressive but the girls really get stuck in and they all enjoy it."
The team plays matches on Sundays against other North-East teams and are always looking for new players.
Training is held on the field next to Consett Sports Centre on Fridays from 5.30pm to 7pm led by coach Alan Whigham, whose daughter Claire, 13, plays in midfield.
The team is managed by Paula Clarke, mother of midfielder Laura, 13, and goalkeeper Rachel, 12.
Mr Whiteman said: "The parents all like to get involved and watch the matches together and discuss ways of fundraising.
"We have all become friends so there is a social side to it as well."
The supporters' club is raising money to support the Belles by holding a spring fair St Patrick's Church Hall, in Consett, on May 7.
