A veterinary nurse is celebrating after being voted the best in the business.
Rachel Smith, 28, of Vets4Pets in Framwellgate Moor, Durham City, was named Vet Nurse of the Year in the annual Petplan Veterinary Awards.
Ms Smith, 28, who has been qualified for seven years, joined Vets4Pets in March 2003 and was recently made a partner of the practice.
She received her prize, which includes £1,000-worth of travel vouchers, at a ceremony, in Birmingham, on Thursday night.
"I was very nervous. I didn't think it would be me but it was a great pleasure to stand up and receive it," she said.
"It was nice to be nominated in the first place. It was a pat on the back. But to win it is unbelievable.''
Ms Smith, who lives in Bedlington and has a five-year-old daughter, may spend her prize visiting a friend who has moved to Texas.
Fiona Pinkney, of Petplan, said: "The dedication and commitment Rachel shows towards animals and clients alike is exceptional.
"It was clear from the numerous nominations that she is a true animal lover, who is always willing to go that extra mile and is thoroughly deserving of this award."
