A SCHOOLGIRL has won gold and silver medals at an international martial arts event.
Naomi Denton, 14, from Darlington, picked up the accolades at the International Tae Kwon Do Tournament in Lisbon, Portugal, during the Easter break.
The 14-year-old, a pupil at Teesside High School, in Eaglescliffe, travelled to the event with team-mates from the Kim Chung Do Kwon Centre in Darlington.
The gold medal was for a team event which involves a set of synchronised movements forming a pattern.
Her silver was for the Team Self-Defence event.
"We were only beaten by point one of a mark" said Naomi, who achieved her black belt a year ago.
She took up the sport less than four years ago and faces her next competition on April 25, at Sheffield where she will compete in eight individual and team events.
Headmistress Hilary French said: "We are delighted by Naomi's continuing success in such a demanding sport.
"She has shown a great deal of commitment and we wish her well in the next competition."
