A MAN underwent painful surgery to a broken jaw following an unprovoked attack.
The victim, in his 20s, spent several days in hospital after his attacker ran up to him in the street and punched him.
The assault happened at about 10pm on Sunday, March 27, when the victim and a friend were walking home after a night out along Westgate, Guisborough, east Cleveland.
The pair heard footsteps behind them and as they turned around, the attacker punched his victim to the left side of his face before running off.
PC Vicki Robinson described the assault as "totally unprovoked".
She added: "This was a young man merely enjoying a night out with his friend."
The suspect is described as white and about 6ft and of stocky build. He had a shaven head and his hair appeared to be ginger.
Anyone with information is asked to call PC Robinson at Cleveland Police on (01642) 302626
