FIFTY of the youngest pupils at Bishop Auckland primary school received a visit from firefighters yesterday.
The reception classes at St Andrew's, in Henknowle, sat in the fire engine and tried out hoses with a crew from Blue Watch, based at Bishop Auckland Fire Station.
Firefighters gave them a safety lesson and handed out information on smoke alarms for them to take home.
Station manager Peter Matthews said: "We try to visit every school through our community fire safety activities. If we can get the safety message across to children, they take it home to their parents."
The fire service can fit free smoke alarms and give advice. For details, call 0191-332 4222.
