PLANS to convert a pig farm into five industrial units have provoked widespread opposition from neighbours.

Joseph E Swiers Limited wants to develop West End Farm at Dishforth, near Thirsk, into the units, which would be used for light industry or storage.

It has been estimated that the plans would generate 144 vehicle trips a day.

Dishforth Parish Council said the traffic would be too much for the area and that there were plenty of other industrial sites nearby.

A residents' meeting at the end of last month attracted about 70 people, all of whom opposed the plans.

Residents, who have sent 55 letters of objection to Harrogate Borough Council, said the development would be out of character with the village, would cause congestion and affect house prices.

Acorus Rural Property Services, on behalf of Joseph E Swiers Limited, said the village would benefit if the application was approved because it would mean an end to the agricultural use of the site.

Planning officer Richard Forrester has recommended approval be deferred to await amended plans on traffic issues.

He said: "Visually, the removal of old buildings, feed silos etc will be an improvement, and the buildings themselves will be enhanced."

Councillors will discuss the plans on Tuesday.
