THERE will be plenty of cause for alarm when firefighters target shoppers in Teesside this weekend.
Firefighters from Thornaby will visit Castlegate Shopping Centre, in Stockton, on Saturday, to talk to people about keeping their homes safe.
It is part of the brigade's campaign to carry out almost a quarter of a million home fire safety check visits over the next four years. So far, firefighters have completed 23,000 checks.
The firefighters will be offering a free fire safety check which includes the fitting of a free smoke alarm and advice on escape routes and general tips to keep the whole family safe.
"It's important we go out into the community and it gives people the opportunity to have a talk with us while they are out shopping," said Barry Waller, Thornaby Station manager.
"Home fire safety checks are a major part of our work now. We are trying to prevent fires rather than just put them out when they occur.
"Having a working smoke alarm in your home is essential; it can save lives, alerting everyone to a fire in its early stages so they have time to escape. The visit only takes about 15 minutes to complete and is definitely worthwhile."
The firefighters will be in the shopping centre between 11am and 4pm.
For a free home fire safety check, call (01429) 874063 or you can contact your local fire station.
