A TAKEAWAY shop found in shocking conditions has been fined more than £3,000.
Abrakebabra, in Hummershill Lane, Marske, was inspected by food safety officers who found a filthy workplace and dirty equipment.
Food at risk of contamination and a lack of adequate food safety practices resulted in the owner, Saleem Ashraf, appearing in court.
Guisborough magistrates fined Mr Ashraf £750 for each offence after he pleaded guilty to four charges under Food Safety Regulations.
He was also ordered to pay £429 in costs following the successful prosecution by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
In his defence, the court heard Mr Ashraf was shocked at the state of his premises when officers brought them to his attention. He co-operated fully throughout the investigation, accepted culpability and his mind was now focused on the business.
After the hearing, Councillor Eric Empson said: "The council's food team will continue to take all appropriate action to protect the general public from food traders who fail to meet the required standards."
