ROAD safety messages will be emblazoned across a trailer to drive home the message to thousands of residents.

The eye-catching exhibition, using road safety mascot Spike the hedgehog, will be a familiar sight over the coming weeks in every community across Redcar and Cleveland.

The trailer, sponsored by contractor Alfred McAlpine, will also travel around schools to ensure the area's 26,000 pupils know about the dangers on roads and how to stay safe.

Councillor Eric Empson, the council's cabinet member for strategic planning, development and infrastructure, whose responsibilities include road safety, said: "With the increasing volume and speed of traffic, it has never been more important to provide information about how to stay safe on the road, whether as a pedestrian, a cyclist or in a motor vehicle.

"I am pleased that Alfred McAlpine have sponsored this trailer, which will play a vital role in driving home the message, especially to young people, who are perhaps most at risk.

"It will provide a focal point at local events and, along with our colourful road safety character Spike the hedgehog, it will help ensure that the message gets through in a way that is both informative and fun."

Following a competition involving all of the borough's schools, it was a group of pupils from Coatham Primary School who were chosen to pose with Spike for the picture that is boldly printed across the trailer.

Visitors to the trailer will also be able to see the comprehensive range of facilities on board, including a built-in DVD and video player with surround sound and a high-quality 20-inch display monitor.

The trailer also has full access for people with disabilities and a comfortable seating area.

The council's road safety manager, Mike Hall, said: "Although very well equipped, the trailer is actually very compact and so can easily be towed and placed almost anywhere.

" With the equipment we've got on board, we can show safety presentations to groups of up to 12 people."
