PUPILS from a Stanley school have been to London to receive an award for winning a national art competition.
Youngsters from East Stanley School won in the category for children aged four to seven in the Persil's Hands on Art workshops.
Sue Blackett and members of her art class demonstrated their award-winning talents and beat off competition from over 100 schools across the UK.
The winning class was presented with its trophy by popular Children's BBC stars Mark Speight and Kirsten O'Brien at the Natural History Museum in London.
As part of their prize, the school has won an art day with an artist, illustrator, animator or designer, who will visit the school in the next few months to work with the pupils and teachers.
The youngsters took their inspiration from the works of Jackson Pollock and created a three-sided 'drawing room'. A large wooden frame covered with paper was constructed in the classroom.
It was later used as a stimulus for play and language work when it became a house, a castle, a spider's web or a witch's home, depending on who was playing.
