AN historic seafront promenade is to get a makeover to attract more tourists.
A cash revamp of £750,000 will see significant improvements to the cliff lift and top promenade in Saltburn, east Cleveland, after securing Government funding.
The pier and cliff lift, along with the amusement arcade and holiday chalets, will also be lit up from dusk to midnight.
The top promenade will have visitor gardens, art features and sensory gardens with disabled access.
The aim is to increase the profile of the area and improve facilities for visitors.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, through Groundwork South Tees, will start work in the area on Monday.
The major part of the investment comes after the Tees Valley Coastal Arc, a partnership between Redcar and Hartlepool councils, secured £600,000 from the Government's regional development agency One NorthEast.
There is a further £150,000 from the borough council with more support from the Learning and Skills Council, the Wise Group, the Friends of Saltburn Pier and Saltburn Pier Entertainments.
The council's cabinet member for economic development Councillor Vera Moody said: "The promenade will be a safer, more attractive place to spend time once the work is complete."
The first phase of the work will install lighting around the cliff lift and chalets and will take up to four months to complete.
Work on the top promenade is due to start next month and is expected to take up to 11 months to complete.
