A CAMPAIGN is launched today to attract more than 8,000 recruits to the region's construction industry over the next four years.
ConstructionSkills is particularly seeking to attract women, people from black and minority ethnic groups and graduates.
The recruits are needed because construction is taking off in the region with major projects in Stockton and Newcastle.
Other proposed projects include the East Coast Mainline upgrade and regenerating the north dock in Hartlepool.
Nicola Thompson, director of communications at CITB-ConstructionSkills, said: "The construction industry is missing out on much-needed talent due to an outdated image that's a real turn-off for women and those from ethnic minorities.
"Like other industries, construction is moving with the times and this campaign is an investment in its lifeblood."
Recent research by the Equal Opportunities Commission showed that one in eight girls were keen to work in the industry, but only one per cent of construction workers were female.
The campaign involves posters and adverts featuring projects such as the Millennium bridge on the Tyne and a grant scheme for employers to offer to new workers.
