ONE of the region's favourite ships, the replica of Captain Cook's Bark Endeavour, had to be towed from a sand bank after running aground off the Australian coast yesterday.
The ship, which attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors during its visits to Whitby and Teesside, was nearing the end of a five-month voyage from England and was due to anchor in Botany Bay, Sydney, on Saturday.
Endeavour was on its way to the Australian National Maritime Museum, at Darling Harbour, when it ran aground.
When Capt Cook himself sailed into Botany Bay in 1770, he relied on a member of crew with a length of rope to ensure the waters were deep enough to avoid running aground - unlike his ship's modern counterpart, which boasts satellite navigation, radar and all the advances of the 21st Century.
