MATTHEW Bates is refusing to be drawn on which side of the A66 he will be playing next season, insisting his immediate thoughts are on helping Darlington to promotion.
The 18-year-old Middlesbrough defender was outstanding on his debut in Quakers' 1-1 draw at Mansfield on Saturday.
Bates is on loan at the Williamson Motors Stadium until the end of the season, but manager David Hodgson has already made enquiries over his availability for the 2005/06 campaign.
The Stockton-born stopper recently penned a four-and-a-half year deal at the Riverside, and Boro boss Steve McClaren will monitor Bates' progression this term, before committing the youngster next season.
"At the moment I just want to concentrate on doing well for Darlington this season," said Bates. "What I do next season hasn't even crossed my mind yet.
"Of course it's flattering that Darlington are already talking about wanting me for next season after just one game, but all I want to do is think about the next three games.
"What happens next season is for Middlesbrough to decide."
Earlier this season Hodgson was rebuffed by the Teessiders in his attempts to re-sign young Middlesbrough striker Danny Graham on loan. After scoring twice in seven starts for Quakers last year, Graham has gone on to make 15 appearances for Boro's first-team this season.
And, while Bates will hope to follow in Graham's footsteps, Hodgson will hope to have first option on the player if he becomes available next season.
Quakers entertain Rushden this weekend, where Bates will make his home debut. After Saturday's draw Quakers hold a two-point cushion inside the play-off zone with three games left.
"It's another massive game for us and one we must win," said Bates. "I'm looking forward to playing in front of our home fans for the first time and hopefully we can give them the result they want."
