THE demolition of a former primary school was well under way yesterday - as developers told of their delight at progress on a £60m community village.
The old Alderman Leach school, in Cockerton, Darlington, is being pulled down to make way for housing.
Developers Bussey and Armstrong have secured outline permission to build up to 80 properties on the site, but a start date has yet to be decided.
The school's closure was confirmed in June 2003 and it has since reopened after a £2.9m move to the West Park development, at Faverdale.
Bussey and Armstrong director Tony Cooper said the housing on the site could include a mix of apartments and two, three and four- bedroomed properties.
He also hailed the success of the West Park project, which has seen dozens of houses and a mental health hospital built, with a shopping area, pharmacy, doctor's surgery, pub and other facilities to follow.
Mr Cooper said: "The next significant thing will be the handing over of the parkland to Darlington Borough Council in June."
