BARONESS Maddock visited the region yesterday to focus on the crisis she said was facing homeless single people.
The Liberal Democrat housing spokeswoman in the House of Lords was in Durham City to visit Durham Action on Single Housing, at Dragonville, accompanied by the party's candidate in the constituency, Carol Woods.
Ms Woods highlighted the issue that the sale of council houses was causing a chronic shortage of rented accommodation in the city.
"The city council is selling approximately 30 houses a month, which is depleting the stock of council housing in particular and the stock of housing for rent in general, which means the waiting lists are getting longer, she said. "The Lib Dems would allow councils to build again by releasing the money generated by council house sales - that would release £5m to build new houses in the city."
