AWARD-WINNING student Kay Devlin is hoping to build on her success after being named North-East student of the year.
The 42-year-old from Bishop Auckland was nominated by her tutors at Darlington College of Technology for the award in a competition run by the Chartered Institute of Building.
She started working in administration at Darlington Borough Council seven years ago, but is now an estimator surveyor and attends college for an HNC in business studies.
"I was really surprised to be nominated as I didn't think I was better than anyone else," said Miss Devlin.
"I was even more surprised to win and was really pleased with myself.
"I hope to continue with my studies and eventually take a degree.
"I am learning an awful lot now and, while it is a challenge, it is also very interesting.
