A MODEL mockup that simulates the effects of a crash on the occupants of a car is being used to make young people aware of the importance of belting up.
Road safety chiefs in Hartlepool are taking the device to schools in the town to demonstrate the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.
The model car, containing several doll-type figures, is released down a ramp, throwing the occupants through the windscreen when it comes crashing to a halt.
The car is fitted with seatbelts, which can be used to demonstrate the opposite effect.
Paul Watson, Hartlepool Borough Council's road safety officer, said: "It is important that we impress upon people of all ages the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
"It only takes a few seconds to put on a seatbelt, and the consequences of failing to do so can be devastating."
Reception class children at St Teresa's Primary School, Hartlepool, took part in the first demonstration session.
Other schools, both primary and secondary, are being invited to take part in the scheme.
