AN appeal has gone out for lifeguards to man County Durham's only heated open-air swimming pool.
Volunteers who run the pool at Stanhope, in Weardale, are concerned they may not be able to open the pool for the summer unless enough recruits are found.
The Weardale Open-air Swimming Pool Association (WOSPA) only has two lifeguards lined up for the season's start, at the end of May. Around eight lifeguards - ideally both men and women - are needed to run the pool under Health and Safety regulations.
"At present, we are desperately short of recruits," said WOSPA treasurer Julian Haynes.
"If we are not able to get more by the start of the season, there is a real danger we will not be able to open."
Mr Haynes said the recruits would be paid competitive rates for shifts up to eight hours.
Those who are not already qualified would be able to attend training courses.
"In many ways, it is an ideal summer job, especially for students," said Mr Haynes. "Apart from working outdoors, they are also able to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the North."
Anyone wishing to become a lifeguard should contact Mr Haynes on (01388) 528673.
