PRIZE exhibits from a North Yorkshire museum are on the move - but only across the local market square.

A "Flying Showcase" of items from the Green Howards regimental museum, in Richmond, has been set up in the town's King's Head Hotel.

The idea is to draw attention to facilities that the museum can provide to people researching their family history. The display includes the medals of Captain T E Dufty, who was killed in action near Ypres in May 1915.

Also on show is his "dead man's penny" - a large bronze commemorative medallion given to the families of men who died in the First World War - as well as examples of the documentation that the museum can supply to people undertaking research into the military career of their forebears.

Museum assistant Paul Cooper, who has assembled the display, said: "For anyone who has had a relative in the Green Howards, we can usually supply quite a lot of information about their military career.

"People are often surprised, and very grateful, that we are able to tell them so much.

"The display is intended to encourage visitors to the hotel to come to the museum and see what we can offer them in their genealogical research."
