MORE action has been pledged to make a low-crime district even safer.

Harrogate and District Safer Communities Partnership has unveiled its plans in a document spanning 2005/2008. It covers a 505 square mile area stretching from eastern fringes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the northern areas of outer Leeds and Bradford while also including Ripon, Masham, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge, Boroughbridge, as well as Harrogate itself.

Its themes for the next three years include:

* Neighbourhood issues including personal safety and less burglary, fear of crime, domestic abuse and bad driver behaviour

* Less town centre begging, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour linked to what is described as the night-time environment and violent crime

* Developing a responsible environment with respect and personal responsibility highlighted, combating bad behaviour among young people and working alongside youngsters on the fringe of crime

* Dealing with binge drinking, preventing and assisting people with drug and alcohol addictions

* Increasing awareness of the Safer Communities Partnership, which brings together issues of concern to the community.

While looking to the future, the partnership has highlighted in its latest report a string of its successes.

They follow a major crime audit last year, playing a key role in helping to build a true picture of wide ranging issues affecting residents.

Successes by the partnership include:

* Using new powers to combat anti-social behaviour

* Say no to crime days

* Extra anti-truancy patrols

* Diversionary activities for youngsters

* Extra closed circuit TV cameras across district

* Purchase of mobile security cameras

* A mobile youth facility

* Financial backing for 54 community safety projects

* Action to tackle street begging

* Installation of 500 smoke alarms by fire service.
