A GROUP of parents and teachers have raised over £20,000 through fund-raising projects to benefit children at a north Durham school.
The Friends of St Benet's started three years ago with the aim of raising £5,000 for St Benet's School in Ouston, near Chester-le-Street.
But they have surpassed their expectations by organising auctions, family nights, balloon races, discos and quiz nights to raise cash.
The money has transformed the playground, with game wall boards, playground markings, picnic benches and bird tables.
They have also helped transform everyday life of the school by donating a PA system and doing repairs to school.
Headteacher Damian Groark said: "They do wonderful work and it is all voluntary. We are very lucky to have a body of people who are prepared to give up their free time to help as much as they do.
"It is about viewing the school as an integral part of the community."
The main event of the Friends' calendar is a summer fair, which 2,500 people attended last year.
It is to be held on the school grounds on June 12, from 2pm to 5pm in the school grounds.
There will be a bouncy castle, slide, Hetton Silver Band, a fire engine, police, refreshments, hot dogs, a dancing and gymnastics display, raffles and beat the goalie.
If the weather is bad, the fair will be held in the school and a marquee. Tickets are available in avance from the school and cost 50p.
