THE first stage of the formal process of transferring Teesdale council's housing stock has been agreed.
Teesdale District Council yesterday unanimously approved a document which is to be sent out to all council house tenants and details the proposals. Residents will have 28 days in which to comment.
The council wants to transfer its 900 homes because it does not have the resources to bring its stock up to the national standard.
It wants to transfer its stock to Teesdale Housing Association, which will work with Endeavour Housing Association as North Star Housing Group.
A housing association would be able to access funds unavailable to the council.
Council chairman Robin Simpson said: "If the tenants decide not to accept the transfer, then we have grave problems in the future."
A ballot of tenants will take place in June, with any transfer to take place next year.
