THE road to a remote dales village was blocked yesterday while a recovery team winched an over-turned refuse truck to safety.
The 26-tonne lorry had been travelling from Eastgate to Rookhope, in Weardale, County Durham, at lunchtime when it left the road and slipped down an embankment.
Police had to close the road for about two hours in the afternoon so rescuers from Alan Sewell Recovery, in Evenwood, could haul the lorry back on to the road.
In a tricky manoeuvre, the salvage team had to use two rescue vehicles with cranes to lift the vehicle onto its side then drag it up the embankment.
The driver and passenger from the refuse truck were not thought to have been injured.
