A teenager's courage and independence has been recognised with an award.
Keith Stewart, who has Down's Syndrome, diabetes and coeliac disease, a condition that requires a special diet, has battled to lead as normal a life as possible.
He was presented with a Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson at Kilton Thorpe Special School, Brotton.
Julie Sievert, Keith's teacher who nominated him for the award, said: "He is an absolute star and a huge inspiration to staff and pupils alike. We are all so proud he is receiving the award. He is always pleasant and cheerful, even staying positive during a recent stay in hospital when he was suffering from pneumonia."
Keith, 17, a Kilton Thorpe pupil since he was five, was recognised for his positive attitude and ability to monitor his insulin levels and diet without any help from staff at the school.
She added: "Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he is always there for other youngsters who need his help and support with their own conditions."
The award recognises 12-18 year olds who have overcome adversity of all descriptions.
