DURHAM will be anxious to avoid any further embarrassment at the hands of Scotland and maintain their 100 per cent record this season when they visit The Grange, Edinburgh, tomorrow.
While Durham have won their first two totesport League matches, this is the opening game for Scotland in their third and final season in the one-day league. Next year they will be involved in an expanded C & G Trophy.
Two years ago they won their inaugural match in this competition at Riverside and they made it two wins out of four against Durham at The Grange last season.
In a match reduced to 41 overs a side, Durham made 189 for seven then Shoaib Akhtar quickly removed the Scottish openers but posed no further threat. Colin Smith, one of only three Scotland-born players in the side, scored 79 not out and shared an unbroken stand of 146 with South African Cedric English in a six-wicket win.
Now coached by former Warwickshire batsman Andy Moles, Scotland's main aim this year is to qualify for the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies by finishing in the top five at the ICC Trophy in Ireland in July.
They will not be allowed any overseas players in that competition and there was some controversy surrounding their recent decision to sign South African left-handed batsman Jonathan Beukes.
Pakistani seamer Yasir Arafat, who has played two one-day internationals, has been retained as the other official overseas player, while the squad also includes other Scotland regulars born overseas in Cedric English and Dewald Nel (South Africa), Ryan Watson (Zimbabwe), Paul Hoffman (Australia) and 37-year-old Asim Butt (Pakistan).
As well as being boosted by £270,000 from Sportscotland, they have also received a six-figure sponsorship from the Caledonian Brewing Company, who employ Durham's Gavin Hamilton during the winter. The cash is intended to help six players make themselves available throughout the season.
Durham have added Neil Killeen, who has recovered from a calf injury, to the squad which thrashed Surrey last Sunday.
With three one-day matches in four days, the seamers will be rotated with Steve Harmison coming into the side at home to Sussex tomorrow and for Wednesday's C & G Trophy tie against Derbyshire.

* A bumper holiday crowd is expected at Headingley tomorrow when Yorkshire Phoenix take on Sussex Sharks with each side determined to keep their 100 per cent winning record intact in Division Two of the totesport League.
Yorkshire stick with the same side which has given them such a rousing start with wins over Surrey Lions and Somerset Sabres and director of cricket, David Byas, said he was sure the team would not have lost their rhythm after a week without first team cricket.
