IT SHOULD be easy to dislike Jayne Middlemiss. After all, she's the first to admit that she's led a bit of a charmed life - and nobody likes a show-off.

''I've been working in telly for ten years now and I've been really lucky to do a vast range of programmes,'' says the bubbly 34-year-old presenter in her familiar Geordie lilt. "I just do shows I enjoy - I've travelled the world, met my idols and now I work on a show where I get to be in shops a lot.''

However, contrary to her enviable CV and the confidence that comes with the territory, the most likeable thing about Jayne is that she clearly doesn't take herself too seriously.

''Send a nude one!'' she giggles when I ask her press officer for photos to accompany the piece, referring unfazed to the topless Page Three photos she posed for early in her career.

And, as the presenter of UKTV Style's new makeover show, Here's Looking At You, Jayne is the first to admit that she's made plenty more fashion faux pas since those infamous piccies.

''Oh, God yeah! I think when you're younger you say 'yes' a lot, but now I know what looks good on me personally. I know what I feel good in.

''I don't like to wear clothes that are just fashionable. I do think that whole Sienna Miller thing looks like a uniform and I really hate that. It has to be about what suits your body.''

Her down-to-earth approach to fashion is very much in keeping with the show's theme, and it's the feel-good factor of the surprise one-day makeovers that Jayne finds most appealing.

''It's not about fashion, it's about making people feel good and reminding them that they are sexy,'' she enthuses.

''You go on a bit of a journey with the women. By the end of the day they're really feeling good - even standing differently. You feel like you've done something nice, which is great.

''It's going back to not needing surgery - just wearing clothes that emphasise your good bits and feeling good again.''

In fact, the issue of plastic surgery is clearly a pertinent one for Jayne, given the current trend for 'extreme' makeover shows, in which participants are given thousands of pounds-worth of cosmetic surgery in a bid to boost their confidence.

''I do watch them sometimes and I do find them quite fascinating viewing,'' she admits, before adding, ''but ethically it's not correct - though it's up to them if they want to do that. I think it's quite cruel actually, making them compete - the whole premise of 'you're still not pretty enough'.''

Having spent five months in Los Angeles filming LA Pool Party in 2001, Jayne has also seen her share of surgically enhanced specimens up close.

''It's just gone too far - the women are too thin, they've got faces full of surgery,'' she says of the notoriously looks-obsessed LA scene. ''I'm sorry, but as soon as you start having surgery, you look ugly - and you look older because you've got that 'surgery face', which looks like an older woman trying to look young.''

She's clearly on a roll. ''I personally saw some horrific sights in Los Angeles. At the next table in a restaurant I saw a man who'd had so many facelifts he couldn't even eat his food properly. His girlfriend had a huge diamond ring, but I just thought, 'You're sleeping with him because of that ring - you really need a raincheck'."

However, one thing she did enjoy was hitting the shops in the LA sunshine.

''I'm a massive fan of shopping, I love it,'' she grins, though she admits it was strange getting used to the over-friendly LA shop girls.

'When I first went shopping there, I tried a dress on in there and the assistants were going, 'Oh my God, that's soooo cute on you', and I literally had to walk out of the shop because I thought they were taking the mick. They're so over the top.''

Only women need apply for Jayne's services - although she would make one exception.

''I don't like making over men,'' she admits. ''I can't bear it because I think they're boring and I hate shopping with them. But if Brad Pitt needed new jeans, he only need ring - that's fine,'' she laughs.

While she waits for Brad to call, she's got plenty of glamorous friends to occupy her, including co-presenters from previous shows Tess Daly, Lisa Snowdon and Jamie Theakston.

But should Mr Pitt be looking for a date, Jayne, who is rumoured to have dated Little Britain comedian David Walliams in the past, readily admits she is currently ''single and happy'' - and her TV career is busier than ever.

''I'm doing some things on GMTV and have few other things coming up,'' she reveals, with a mischievous glint in her eye that suggests we'll be seeing a lot more of Miss Middlemiss over the coming months.
