With one game to go to save the season from ruin David Hodgson is urging his players to go goal crazy against Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

Quakers are level on points with Northampton but one behind on goal difference so Darlington have 90 minutes in which to prevent the season ending in premature disappointment.

Sixth-placed Macclesfield could also be caught by Darlington but they finish the season at home to 22nd-placed Rushden so are expected to win, as are the Cobblers who host relegated Kidderminster.

If Northampton and Darlington both win their final positions will be dictated by goal difference but if they're still tied it goes to goals scored.

Quakers are currently behind on both counts so, with fingers crossed that results elsewhere go in their favour, the brief to Darlington is to hit the back of the net - a lot.

"I think it's in our own hands. Nothing in this world can stop us from getting three or four goals against Cheltenham, absolutely nothing," said a positive Hodgson who hopes to have Alun Armstrong back in contention while Craig Hignett may also be in the frame.

"The players are going to have a couple of days rest, come back into training on Tuesday and for the rest of the week we're going to work goddamn hard to make sure we get those goals.

"We've got to get this Lincoln result out of our heads and focus entirely on getting goals next week.

"I want them to get their minds on goals. I'm going to get them all a DVD with the greatest goals in football on and I want them to watch it all week!

"I think we can get goals, whether we can get four or five I don't know, but believe me we're going to go for it.

"We're still in there, we're still fighting and in typical Darlington fashion we've taken it right until the end game."

Five years ago Northampton pipped Hodgson's Darlington to automatic promotion, leaving Quakers to enter the play-offs which ended in defeat in the final at Wembley. This time around both clubs are hoping to be in Cardiff on May 28.

And Hodgson added: "It would kill me if Northampton got into the play-offs on goal difference.

"If we get into the play-offs because we've scored more goals than Northampton I'd be the happiest man in the world, nevermind Darlington."

* Frank Gray, Darlington player/assistant manager to Brian Little during the club's Conference and Division Four title-winning years of 1990 and '91 has been appointed manager of Farnborough Town.

After Little left for Leicester City the ex-Leeds and Nottingham Forest left-back became Quakers' manager for most of season 1991/92 when the club were relegated from the old Division Three.
