RARE images of a century of service by one of the nation's finest fighting forces have been brought together in a unique publication.
Image of the Soldier features the very first photographs of the Durham Light Infantry, taken around 1855 in the Crimea War, up to its final parade in Durham Cathedral, in 1968.
All 169 images are from the regimental archives and many have not previously been published.
They range from weddings to warfare, battlefields to bands, off-duty parties and parades, giving an unprecedented insight into all aspects of the regiment's life.
Gulf War commander General Sir Peter de la Billiere, says in a forward: "Image of the Soldier is a superb book, full of outstanding photographs that capture the spirit of the Durham Light Infantry, an outstanding county regiment remembered and renowned to this day for its courageous record in war throughout the past 150 years."
The book, which is published by County Durham Books, the publishing arm of Durham County Council, also includes a commentary on the history of the regiment.
Image of the Soldier, costing £12.95, will be in local bookshops from May 7.
It will also be available to purchase from www.durham. gov.uk/countydurhambook, or from County Durham Books, on 0191-383 4479.
