A FORMER theatre manager is returning to a top North-East venue in a temporary capacity following the death of its chief executive.
Grahame Morris, the former general manager of Theatre Royal, in Newcastle, agreed to step in after the death of Peter Sarah.
Theatre Royal chairman Councillor John Shipley made the announcement at a board meeting recently where he also announced the go-ahead for the theatre's £4.2m expansion project, in Market Street.
He is confident Mr Morris will provide the necessary stability and support required by the theatre and its staff following the death of its chief executive.
Coun Shipley said: "Having spent seven years here as general manager, Grahame knows the Theatre Royal inside out.
"His track record in theatre management speaks for itself and he will provide a solid base at this very difficult time.
"He is a very popular appointment with the staff and I'm sure many of theatre's long-serving patrons will share fond memories of his time with us."
Mr Morris will only provide temporary cover for the role of general manger while the board seeks to appoint a permanent replacement for Mr Sarah, which is expected to happen in the next few months.
Mr Morris said: "I'm here to support the staff and make them feel safe and secure.
"Peter was a dear friend and I will do my very best to continue his hard work here at the Theatre Royal."
