ONE of the region's tourist attractions stepped back in time yesterday as warriors took to the battlefield.
Living history group The Northumbrians showed visitors to Binchester Roman Fort, in County Durham, what life was like after the Romans left in AD410.
Swords and axes were swung as the re-enactment of an Anglo-Saxon battle gathered pace at the fort, near Bishop Auckland.
The group also demonstrated how the Anglo-Saxons made their clothes and household wares.
The attraction, which is owned by Durham County Council, once stood guard over Dere Street, the main Roman highway linking York, Corbridge and Scotland.
Yesterday's event marked the start of the summer season. Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in the region in the coming months.
