A COUNCILLOR is campaigning for a big clean-up in the twin horse-racing towns of Malton and Norton.
Councillor David Lloyd-Williams has written to Ryedale District Council (RDC) chief executive Harold Mosley after receiving complaints from the public, especially about the Castlegate area and the County Bridge.
Litter-picking in those areas is not good enough, said Coun Lloyd-Williams, a member of North Yorkshire County Council and Malton and Norton town councils.
"The build-up of silt and dust causes a perfect growing medium for weeds and the subsequent tatty appearance of the streets."
He suggested one solution could be to give the responsibility to the town councils, together with the funding, in a similar way to the operation of the local cemeteries.
Coun Lloyd-Williams added: "I am making this plea to RDC to clean up Malton and Norton before we have the massive visitation that Royal Ascot coming to York will generate. At present they look unkempt, uncared for, and filthy."
