THE first of the Guisborough Motor Club's summer series of trials got under way last Saturday night with a massive entry of 125 riders.
Starting from the car park area at the top of Birk Brow, the riders dropped down into the disused quarry where Stewart Walker and Howard Watson laid on a three-lap, ten-section course which catered for all abilities.
An excellent trial produced some brilliant riding on some of the particularly hard sections.
Winner Phil Kettlewell was in a class of his own on the night and finished well clear of second-placed Steve Suddes of Yarm, who lost ground on the awkward section two.
A steep drop followed by a tight right turn over a double rock step to exit took nine marks off him, while Kettlewell stayed clean every lap, along with best inter winner Lishman.
Dodderidge, parading a new line in yellow and black livery, was next best with a solitary dab, while Ian Hopley, utilising his experience from his Mick Andrews and Majesty days, was out on a radically converted 79 TY 250 single shock. Although down on power, the modified suspension worked perfectly and rode some of the big step sections superbly.
Section seven, a tight steep drop over rocks and almost vertical climb out, never bothered the front-runners, but surprisingly took a double failure off Collinson and a maximum off Paul Sadler.
The tight technical turns and steps of section nine bothered most riders, but Tim Peace made a superb effort on his last lap to just lose a dab.
Clubman A was a much closer affair, with Ian Lamb of Guisborough clinching it on most cleans from young Russ Rooksby, who is beginning to look useful. These two kept Raw, Wilkinson and Brown snapping at their heels, proving they are still competitive.
Andy Metcalfe made his run out for the night worthwhile as he snatched Clubman B by the solitary mark from G Raspison.
Mike Raw in C class rode the difficult section seven the best of the Raw family with a score of six, compared to father Dave's 11 and his two brothers Jonathan and Chris on ten and seven respectively. Young Dan Peace won D class without dropping a mark.
