Schools in the Craghead, South Stanley and South Moor areas are taking part in a series of woodland walks.
Pat Oughtibridge, head teacher at South Stanley Infant School, said: "Woods make great outdoor classrooms, especially for children who don't do well in a standard school environment."
The strolls have been organised by Derwentside Primary Care Trust and Groundwork West Durham. There will be free fruit and prizes for lunches with the least packaging. There will also be teddy bears' picnics, bat and badger watches, bluebell walks, dawn chorus events, games and story telling, treasure hunts and tree trails.
Taking part are St Mary's RC Primary School, Stanley; Greenland Infant School, South Moor; South Stanley Infant and Junior Schools, Burnside Primary School, and South Stanley Bloemfontein Primary School, Craghead.
