AN unusual sports tournament is coming to Darlington later this month.
On Wednesday, May 18, ten teams will compete in a boccia competition at the town's Dolphin Centre.
Boccia - pronounced Botcha - is similar to Italian bowls, with the aim to score as many points as possible by getting a ball closest to the jack.
The game is played from a seated position and is ideal for both disabled and able-bodied people to compete against each other.
The teams taking part in the tournament, all with participants aged 11 and upwards, come from across County Durham and will include pupils from Beaumont Hill School, in Darlington
The decision to host the tournament was taken in the wake of a popular boccia-trial session held recently at the Dolphin Centre.
A borough council spokeswoman said: "We are very excited about hosting the town's first boccia tournament.
"We hope the tournament will inspire more people to give boccia a go and eventually we would like to start a league in the town."
