Two pedestrians are in hospital this morning with serious injuries after being knocked down in different accidents around the region.
At around 11pm last night a 20-year-old man was knocked over in Front Street, Perkinsville, near Chester-le-Street in County Durham.
The accident happened when a blue Ford Mondeo turned off the A693 Stanley to Chester-le-Street road into Front Street and the pedestrian stepped out in front of the car.
The pedestrian, named as Scott Oliver, of Brecon Place in Perkinsville, suffered serious head and leg injuries and was taken by ambulance to Newcastle General Hospital where his condition was this morning described as critical but stable.
The driver and passenger of the car were unhurt.
The road was closed for more than two hours after the accident. Witnesses are asked to ring police on 0845 6060365.
Meanwhile, a three-year-old local girl suffered serious head injuries after being knocked down at lunch time yesterday by a Leyland Daf wagon in King George Road, South Shields.
The accident happened at around 1.40pm.
