ORGANISERS of Sunderland's other weekend party - Radio One's Big Weekend in Herrington Country Park - said the event was a resounding success. More than 30,000 music fans attended the party and police dealt with only a handful of minor incidents.
Andy Parfitt, controller of Radio One, said: "Radio One stages events all over the world, in places such as Miami and Atlanta as well as throughout the UK. The warmth of the welcome we've received is right up there with the best."
Councillor Bob Symonds, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "This has been a phenomenal few days for Sunderland. We have seen the city declare the first three results at the General Election, Radio One's Big Weekend has been a huge success and Sunderland AFC lifted the Coca-Cola Championship trophy. It would have been difficult for anyone to have not heard the name Sunderland in the last week."
