STUDENTS from the North-East are being given the chance to sample life at sea with the Royal Navy, on board the training craft HMS Example.
Ten students from the catering department at Tyne Metropolitan College are to board the ship - part of the Northumbria University Royal Naval Unit (NURNU) - which is based at HMS Calliope.
The one-day trip, which sets sail tomorrow, is one of a series offering local students, who are interested in a career with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, to gain hands-on experience of what life is like on a modern war ship.
Lieutenant Caroline Wyness, Commanding Officer of HMS Example, said: "Our main role is to provide navigation, seamanship and general naval training in support of the Northumbria URNU, which provides a three-year package of training and activities for undergraduates, who initially enrol as officer cadets
"We regularly take students to sea at weekends and during their vacation periods and are delighted to be able to extend that experience to other college students who may be interested in a career with the Royal Navy."
