VOLUNTEERS from Witton Park have taken part in a clean-up of their village.
Residents joined with representatives of the Pride campaign and Wear Valley District Council to fill black bags with rubbish.
A large amount of broken glass was picked up from a children's play area and items including an old tin bath, a wooden palette and two gas canisters were also found.
Pride campaign officer at Wear Valley District Council Joanne Morley said: "It is really pleasing that the people of Witton Park have come together to give up their time to make a difference in their community.
"Whilst it is a disappointing fact that the volume of litter in Witton Park has prompted the community association to organise this litter pick, it is hoped their actions will effectively communicate to the people who are littering the village that their behaviour has a negative impact.
"The group were very enthusiastic and achieved a great deal in a couple of hours.
"Hopefully, their actions will encourage others to make an effort to keep the village clean."
The council provided the litter pickers for the volunteers and also cleared away the rubbish that was collected.
