FIREFIGHTERS are giving young people the chance to learn basic skills as part of a new project.
Firefighters in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, are organising a Young Firefighters Scheme, starting in July, for people aged 12 to 16. The aim is for them to learn as part of a team, develop leadership skills and work in the community.
They will meet once a week for a two-hour session and learn skills, including climbing ladders and handling hoses, first aid, fire safety and orienteering. Other activities will include adventure activity weekends with camping, climbing, abseiling and white water rafting.
The scheme is limited to 12 places and anyone wanting to take part are asked to fill in an application form, available from the fire station, and attend an interview.
The closing date for applications is Wednesday, May 25.
