A DISABLED couple have been left devastated after their specially-adapted car was stolen.
The 48-year-old owner was climbing out of his adapted Mercedes Viano people carrier when a thief got in and drove off. The vehicle also contains the couple's wheelchairs.
The theft happened at about 6.30pm on Thursday outside the couple's home in Gardiner Square, Sunderland.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "This theft has clearly had a huge impact on the couple's lives. We would urge anyone with information to get in touch."
The thief was 25 to 35, about 6ft, large build and wearing a blue and white hooped shirt.
Anyone who witnessed the theft or has any information about the whereabouts of the Mercedes is asked to contact Sunderland CID on 0191-454 7555 ext 66245.
