A PLAN for a housing development in Benfieldside, Shotley Bridge, near Consett, has been rejected because of road safety fears.
Darrass Homes wanted to build six townhouses and two flats on derelict land at the junction of Cutlers Hall Road and Benfieldside Road.
Derwentside District Council officers recommended the plan for approval, but it was rejected by the development control committee.
While the site is not in a conservation area, it is in a prominent position on the main road from Blackhill to Shotley Bridge.
In a report to the committee, the council's design and conservation officer said: "The site is a triangle of empty space that is derelict.
"I consider the proposal will enhance this space, which performs no visual or structural function as it stands.
"The layout uses the space and the different levels very well."
Three letters of objection were lodged by residents.
They expressed concerns over highway safety and the impact the development would have on the area.
