HOSPICES have received a cash boost, thanks to the efforts of a local businessman.
Peter Rowley, chief executive of Darlington Building Society, applied to the borough council's community fund for sponsorship before he tackled this year's London Marathon.
The council awarded £1,000 to Mr Rowley, who completed the marathon in three hours and 49 minutes and has raised more than £12,500 for the national Help the Hospices charity.
It is the second time the council has supported Mr Rowley's fundraising efforts. He completed his first marathon two years ago after also getting £1,000 from the authority.
Council leader John Williams said: "Peter is a well-known and respected member of the local business community in Darlington and it is fantastic that he has applied his time and energy to help local charitable causes."
Mr Rowley said: "I am most grateful to Darlington Borough Council for their splendid support. The money raised is going to a great cause."
