AN ambitious scheme to create a community park in the heart of a town near Chester-le-Street is nearer to completion.
The site of St George's Primary School, in Birtley, which was demolished several years ago, is currently undergoing extensive work.
It is costing about £230,000 to create an area for the local community to use.
Features will include a toddlers area, a BMX cycle track, a ballpark and a quiet area likely to appeal to older members of the community.
Extensive landscaping is central to the scheme to divide the park into different areas, crossed by footpaths with seating areas.
Landscape architects have incorporated an array of trees and shrubs into the design, which will be both visually appealing while forming the basis of these segregated areas.
As part of its Busmiles Community Programme, Go North-East has donated a mature tree to help with the substantial landscaping plans.
Martin Harris, commercial director at Go North-East, said: "We are delighted to have helped in the creation of the park which, in turn, will improve the quality of life for residents of all generations.
"Birtley is at the centre of our operating area, and as such, we are pleased to be able to support organisations within this area."
The scheme is co-ordinated by Station Lane Area Residents' Association.
John Gallon, chairman of the association, said: "Prior to the renovation, many resident's felt that Birtley was lacking an accessible outdoor area for all residents to enjoy and benefit from."
