A SCHOOL which earlier this year was awarded specialist status as a sports college is looking forward to cash injections totalling £1m.
The money is heading for Lady Lumley's School, at Pickering, for upgrades to the building and new sporting facilities.
The school will receive £150,000 from the Big Lottery Fund on top of its £150,000 capital funding as a specialist college.
With a further £40,000 from Ryedale District Council, it will build a fitness suite in the Northern Ryedale Leisure Centre, to which it is attached, as well as refurbishing the changing rooms and other public areas in the centre and the school.
Two classrooms will also be refurbished to make them dedicated rooms for sports studies, with modern IT equipment, and one of the school's science labs will be upgraded.
A further £585,000 has been earmarked for the school by the local education authority to replace five temporary buildings. That money will be supplemented by £100,000 from the Lady Lumley's Educational Foundation.
Headteacher John Tomsett said: "This is wonderful news."
