ONE of the leading figures in the campaign against a North-East assembly is moving on to the national stage to fight for a No vote in the referendum on a new European Constitution.
Neil Herron, of Sunderland, who came to prominence in the Metric Martyrs campaign and last year as leader of the North East No group, will launch the People's No Campaign in Westminster on Wednesday, four days before the French vote in their referendum.
A similar referendum is expected in the UK late next year. Although there are likely to be a number of groups set up to campaign for a No vote in any future referendum, Mr Herron says the People's No Campaign will have cross-party grassroots support.
The group grew out of the Referendum 04 group, which campaigned for the right to have a vote on the issue, and already has more than 100,000 supporters.
Mr Herron said: "The constitution represents further surrender of power to Brussels and this is quite simply unacceptable."
