TWO plumbing students from north Durham have celebrated success in the regional heat of a trade competition.

The New College Durham apprentices took part in the North-East round of the British Plumbing Employers' Council (BPEC) skills competition.

Jordan Taylor, an NVQ level 3 apprentice who is studying at New College Durham and training with John Dunn, won first place in the sheet leadwork competition.

Luke Harrison, an NVQ level 2 apprentice at New College Durham and training with Sunderland Housing Group, was second in the pipework competition.

The competition was held at Middlesbrough College and was open to all colleges throughout the North-East and Cumbria.

It is the first time an independent competition has been held in the UK devoted entirely to plumbing skills and it is aimed at promoting the importance of skills in the plumbing industry.

The students had to work to exacting briefs and deadlines and remain focused in a competitive environment.

Jordan won a cash prize of £150 plus £20 gift vouchers and a certificate of achievement. He will now go on to represent the region in the national final.
