TWO men were arrested on suspicion of possessing crack cocaine yesterday after police launched an early morning raid.

Fifteen officers were involved in the operation, which targeted a council house on the Skerne Park estate, in Darlington, just before 7am.

The two men, from the Midlands, are both in their 40s and are understood to have been temporary lodgers at the property.

Police arrested them on suspicion of having 15 rocks of crack cocaine, with a street value of several hundred pounds.

Detective Inspector Shaun McElvaney, who led the operation, said the pre-planned raid had been a success.

"Crack cocaine has not been a problem in this force area in recent times," he said.

"When we are provided with community intelligence that relates to its presence within the community, we take speedy and positive action to address the problem."

The men were questioned at Darlington police station yesterday, before being released on bail.
