NEW Orleans trumpeter Abram Wilson will lead workshops to help young brass players in the Durham area discover different kinds of music.

The sessions are part of a series being organised by Free Range Music and the Durham Brass Festival that also includes workshops with Dutch trio De Jongens Driest.

The trumpeter, whose debut CD Jazz Warrior has been widely acclaimed, will introduce workshop participants to jazz improvisation, blues and swing, using a repertoire of traditional North-East songs.

The co-ordinator of the project, Rob Guest, said: "We hope participants enjoy this different approach to music-making and would like to be part of performances on July 2, 3, 9 and 10 as part of the Durham Brass Festival.''

The workshops will be held between 7pm and 9.30pm at Alington House, North Bailey, Durham, on May 25 and June 8, 15, 23 and 29. To take part call Rob Guest or Nigel Greenwood on 0191-301 8245.
